A skimmer takes water off the top two centimetres of the pool, and that is the point: leaves, pollen, insects and the oily film that carries sun cream all float, and anything caught at the surface never reaches the floor for a robot to deal with. This shelf divides by mounting. Hang-over skimmers (Einhängeskimmer) clip over the wall of a frame pool and need no hole; wall-mount skimmers are cut into a steel wall and sealed with a gasket plate; floating skimmers are towed by the suction hose and work on any pool. Then the basket — capacity, and above all whether it can be lifted out one-handed, because a skimmer basket emptied every second day gets emptied and one that needs a tool does not. And the water level, which is a maintenance fact rather than a specification: a skimmer works over a band of about ten centimetres, and a pool outside it either draws air or floods the throat.
