The net and the brush are the two tools that get used before anything mechanical, and each comes in two forms that are not interchangeable. A flat skimmer net is a shallow frame for lifting what floats — it drags less through water and is what you reach for with leaves on the surface. A bag or deep net holds a volume and is what reaches the floor, because a flat net tips its contents out on the way up. The specification worth comparing is the mesh: a coarse mesh moves fast and passes pollen, a fine mesh catches pollen and is noticeably harder to pull. Then the frame, which is where cheap nets fail — a moulded plastic frame with an integral lip that slides along the pool floor lasts; a bare aluminium rim scratches a liner and the mesh tears out of the seam. For brushes the division is the bristle: nylon bristles for a vinyl liner, and stainless or mixed bristles only for tile and concrete, because a stainless brush on a liner cuts it. A curved or "wall-and-floor" head reaches the join where algae starts, which a flat head does not. And for both, the pole fit, which is the European 1¼" or 1½" clip standard and which decides whether the head works with the pole you own.
