Granular chlorine does the job tablets cannot: it raises free chlorine in minutes rather than over days, which is what a pool needs after a heavy bather load, a storm, or an algae bloom. The chemistry divides the shelf and the division is the single most useful thing to know. Dichlor granules dissolve fast, are near pH-neutral, and are stabilised — they carry cyanuric acid exactly as trichlor tablets do, so they add to the same accumulating load. Calcium hypochlorite granules carry no stabiliser, hold 65–70 % available chlorine, and raise both pH and calcium hardness, which matters in hard water. A pool already near its cyanuric acid ceiling wants the second; a pool starting the season wants the first. The number to compare across both is the active chlorine percentage, and after that the dose per cubic metre that the maker states for routine chlorination and for shock treatment — two quite different figures that many listings blur into one. Then dissolving behaviour: granules that need pre-dissolving in a bucket and granules that can be broadcast are different products in use, and broadcasting an undissolved granule onto a vinyl floor bleaches it. And pack size, because opened granular chlorine absorbs moisture and cakes, and a five-kilogram tub bought for a small pool is mostly a storage problem.
