A manual vacuum head is a nozzle on a pole connected to the filter pump by a hose, and it is the oldest way to clean a pool floor and still the one that costs nothing to run. It divides on the surface it is built for. A brush-skirted head seals against a vinyl liner and is what an above-ground pool needs; a wheeled or rollered head runs on tile and concrete and skips on a soft liner. Weight is the property nobody lists and everybody notices: a head that is too light floats off the floor as soon as suction builds, which is why several designs are deliberately ballasted or take a weight. The width is the usual trade — a wide head clears an open floor quickly, a narrow one gets into a corner and a step tread. Then the two fits. The hose connection is 32 or 38 mm and must match the skimmer adaptor, not just the hose. The pole fit is again the inch standard, 1¼" or 1½". And the technique the head depends on, which is worth saying because it is the difference between vacuuming and stirring: the hose is filled with water before it is connected, so the pump does not pull air and lose prime.
