The best pool test strips for 2026

A test strip is the instrument people actually use, because it takes five seconds and needs nothing else — and the number that decides whether a pool gets tested twice a week is not accuracy, it is the cost per test. A 150-strip tub and a 50-strip tub at similar prices are a factor of three apart, and this shelf is full of both. The second figure is the parameter count, and more is not automatically better: a 3-in-1 strip reads free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity, which is the working set for a chlorinated pool; a 7-in-1 adds total chlorine, cyanuric acid, total hardness and bromine, and the one worth paying for in that list is cyanuric acid, because it is what explains a pool that reads chlorine and behaves as though it has none. The third is the thing strips are genuinely weak at: resolution. A printed colour scale steps at about 0,5 mg/l on chlorine and 0,2 on pH, and between two blocks there is nothing — which is fine for "is this pool in range" and not enough for deciding a dose on a large volume. Then shelf life and storage, which this shelf mostly ignores and which matters a lot: the pads are hygroscopic, an open tub in a damp pool house is unreliable within weeks, and the desiccant capsule is not decoration.
